Laser hair removal: what to expect before, during and after your treatment

Shaving, waxing and plucking can become time-consuming, especially when they are part of your regular routine. Laser hair removal offers a longer-term approach by targeting the hair follicles and gradually reducing hair growth in the treated area.
If you are considering your first laser hair removal session, here is what you need to know before booking.
How does laser hair removal work?
Laser hair removal uses controlled light energy to target the pigment within the hair follicle. The energy is converted into heat, which disrupts the follicle’s ability to produce new hair.
Because hair grows in different cycles, not every follicle can be treated effectively during one appointment. This is why a course of treatments is normally recommended rather than a single session.
Results vary according to the treatment area, hair colour, skin tone, hormonal factors and how consistently appointments are completed.
What areas can be treated?
Laser hair removal can be used on many areas of the face and body, including:
Upper lip and chin
Beard and beard line
Underarms
Arms
Chest and abdomen
Back
Bikini line and Brazilian area
Buttocks
Half legs and full legs
Your therapist will assess the area and recommend an appropriate treatment schedule based on your individual needs.
How should I prepare?
Correct preparation helps protect your skin and makes the treatment more effective.
Before your appointment:
Shave the treatment area as instructed.
Avoid waxing, threading or plucking, as the laser needs the hair follicle to remain intact.
Avoid tanning and fake tan before treatment.
Tell your therapist about any medication, recent procedures or changes to your health.
Avoid applying deodorant, perfume or strongly fragranced products to the area on the day, where applicable.
A consultation and patch test may be required before your first complete session.
What happens during the appointment?
The treatment area will be assessed and prepared before the laser is applied. You may feel warmth or a brief snapping sensation, although the experience varies depending on the area and your individual sensitivity.
Smaller areas, such as the upper lip or underarms, can usually be treated quickly. Larger areas, such as the back or full legs, require more time.
What should I expect afterwards?
Some temporary redness, warmth or mild sensitivity can occur after treatment. This usually settles relatively quickly, but your therapist will explain what is normal for your skin and treatment area.
After your session:
Avoid excessive heat, hot showers, saunas and intense exercise for the recommended period.
Protect exposed areas from the sun.
Use the aftercare products recommended by your therapist.
Avoid scratching or exfoliating sensitive skin.
Do not wax or pluck between appointments.
You can normally continue shaving between sessions.
How many sessions will I need?
There is no single number that works for everyone. A course of treatments is usually necessary because the laser is most effective when the hair is in an active growth phase.
Some areas may also require occasional maintenance sessions following the initial course. Your therapist can provide a more realistic recommendation after assessing your skin, hair and treatment goals.
